Bitwise Shuts Down Dogecoin ETF Following Sharp Volume Decline

Asset management firm Bitwise is shutting down its Dogecoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) less than a year after its high-profile debut, following a sustained slump in investor demand. The fund, which traded under the ticker BWOW on US exchanges, will liquidate its assets after failing to replicate its initial launch-day enthusiasm.

A Short-Lived Crypto Experiment

Bitwise launched the BWOW ETF in November 2025 to capture the surging retail interest in meme-based digital assets. The fund initially enjoyed a successful launch, generating approximately $3 million in trading volume during its opening week as speculative trading peaked.

However, the momentum proved short-lived. Traditional brokerage investors showed little sustained interest in holding a highly volatile meme coin through a structured financial product over the subsequent months.

The Reality of Meme Coin ETFs

Market data reveals that BWOW’s daily trading volume plummeted shortly after its launch, never again approaching its initial $3 million high. Financial analysts suggest that the core audience for Dogecoin prefers direct ownership via cryptocurrency exchanges rather than paying management fees for an ETF wrapper.

“While Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs have successfully attracted institutional capital, speculative assets like Dogecoin struggle to find a purpose in traditional brokerage accounts,” said Marcus Vance, a digital assets researcher. This lack of institutional demand ultimately made the fund economically unviable for Bitwise to maintain.

Implications for the Crypto Market

The closure of BWOW serves as a cautionary tale for asset managers attempting to securitize highly speculative altcoins. Industry observers expect this development to slow down the pipeline of filings for other meme-based financial instruments.

In the coming months, regulators and issuers will likely refocus their efforts on diversified crypto baskets or established layer-1 tokens rather than single-asset meme coin funds. Analysts are watching whether competitors with similar filings will quietly withdraw their proposals in light of Bitwise’s exit.
