Vitalik Buterin Warns Against ETH Consensus Overload

Reading time: < 1 minute

Vitalik Buterin has written an article entitled “Don’t Overload the Ethereum Consensus” to caution against stretching the Ethereum consensus beyond its core functions of validating blocks and securing the network.

He has warned that this could result in “high systemic risks to the ecosystem.”

These ideas were spurred by the implementation of The Merge and the switch from a Proof-of-Work model to Proof-of-Stake in September 2022.

Buterin has argued against the notion of utilizing the blockchain public consensus for initiatives such as decentralized oracles, restaking and managed recovery of L2 protocols through the main network, stating that it carries the risk of a 51% attack and violates the community’s autonomy.

He has recommended that the network should remain minimal and that developers should explore alternative security strategies rather than overstepping the bounds of the consensus.
