US DoJ Appeals Against Decision to Allow Binance.US to Buy Voyager Digital Assets

The US Department of Justice has appealed against a $1.02 billion deal approved by Judge Michael Wiles for Binance.US to purchase Voyager broker assets, which are going through bankruptcy proceedings.

The decision was made despite the risks noted by the judge. In December 2020, Binance.US had offered the highest bid for Voyager assets, but it was opposed by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the New York State Department of Financial Services.

At one of the hearings, the court asked the SEC to explain its position. Judge Wiles has noted that action needs to be taken since lenders cannot access the assets they had invested in due to the uncertainty.

An auction to sell Voyager’s assets was won by FTX in September last year. The broker has reached a preliminary agreement with the US division of the Sam Bankman-Fried exchange.
