The US Department of the Treasury, the State Department and the FBI have issued a joint document warning about the activities of North Korean IT specialists who take freelance work in various technology, including crypto-related projects.
According to the US authorities, North Korea receives income through such employees, which it directs to finance weapons programs.
North Korean professionals can pose as citizens of other countries using VPNs, stolen or falsified documents.
The departments believe North Korean-linked employees often work with projects focused on the cryptocurrency sector. According to the document:
“Some IT professionals from North Korea have developed virtual currency exchanges or created analytical tools and applications for traders and sold such products themselves.”
