Italian Banks Push for Faster Digital Euro Rollout to Compete with US, Despite Cost Concerns

Reading time: < 1 minute

While concerned about high costs, Italy’s banks are urging a swift and competitive rollout of the digital euro to keep the EU from falling behind other global powers.

The Italian Banking Association (ABI) has endorsed the ECB’s plan but favors a “dual approach” to accelerate progress, directly referencing the United States’ recent passage of the GENIUS Act.

The ABI’s support is conditional on finding a way to manage the substantial capital expenditures, asking to spread the costs over time to make the strategic project feasible for financial institutions.
