A proposal to create a Swedish national Bitcoin reserve was put before parliament on Wednesday. The motion, submitted by MPs Dennis Dioukarev and David Perez, calls for an official investigation into using Bitcoin to diversify state holdings and serve as a hedge against inflation.
The plan mirrors ideas floated in the US, suggesting that the reserve could be funded initially with Bitcoin seized from criminals.
This is now possible due to a law enacted in November 2024 that allows Swedish authorities to confiscate luxury items, including cryptocurrency, even without a direct investigation. The MPs also seek to block the introduction of a digital central bank currency, positioning Bitcoin as the preferred digital asset for the state.
