Argentine lawyers have filed fraud charges against President Javier Milei in criminal court, as reported by one of the attorneys to The Associated Press. The charges stem from Milei’s promotion of a cryptocurrency on his social media accounts.
On Friday, Milei posted on X about $LIBRA, describing it as a coin intended to “encourage economic growth by funding small businesses and startups.”
However, he deleted the post just a few hours later, and the currency’s value subsequently crashed, leading to millions of dollars in losses for its brief investors, according to the financial site Dexscreener.
The coin, developed by KIP Protocol and Hayden Davis, was accessible through a link that directed users to a website named vivalalibertadproject.com, which references a well-known phrase Milei often uses to conclude his speeches and social media messages.
