Malaysia‘s state utility Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has incurred losses of 4.6 billion ringgit ($1.11 billion) from electricity theft linked to cryptocurrency mining.
The energy ministry stated that 13,827 premises were involved in the illegal activity between 2020 and August this year.
TNB is conducting joint operations with authorities to seize mining equipment and has established a database to track suspects.
While crypto mining itself is not explicitly regulated, the acts of meter tampering and illegal connections are prosecutable under existing electricity laws.
