Citing lessons from other regions, British Columbia is proactively banning new cryptocurrency mining to protect its residents from potential electricity rate increases and supply constraints.
The government stated that unchecked power demands from volatile sectors have historically left taxpayers footing the bill. To prevent this, B.C. will permanently prohibit new crypto projects from connecting to BC Hydro’s grid, preserving its hydroelectric power for stable, job-creating industries.
The ban is part of a larger strategy to manage unprecedented electricity demand and safeguard the province’s economic interests.
