The US Department of Justice (DoJ) has begun investigating a security breach at Coinbase, where internal documents and data from a “small subset” of customer accounts were compromised through the bribing of overseas support agents.
Coinbase Chief Legal Officer Paul Grewal explained:
“We have notified and are working with the DOJ and other US and international law enforcement agencies, and welcome law enforcement’s pursuit of criminal charges against these bad actors.”
The DoJ has not released a public statement. After the breach, where perpetrators demanded a $20 million ransom, Coinbase opted to offer a $20 million reward for information leading to the perpetrators.
The exposed information includes customer names, addresses, emails, account balances, and partial Social Security numbers, while private keys and passwords remained secure, leaving Prime accounts unaffected.
