The National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) of Brazil has taken action against the controversial World ID project. The ANPD has ordered Tools for Humanity (TFH) to stop offering cryptocurrency or financial rewards in exchange for biometric data from Brazilian citizens.
This decision was made on January 24 after an investigation was launched in November following the project’s launch in Brazil. The ANPD’s enforcement division concluded that offering crypto payments could potentially undermine the consent given by individuals to collect their sensitive biometric data.
Under the name Worldcoin, the World Network platform (developed by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s Tools for Humanity) aims to create a global digital identity system and financial network utilizing advanced iris biometric technology.
However, the ANPD has expressed opposition to this project, as offering financial incentives could potentially manipulate the choices of vulnerable populations and violate individual rights. This is because the data collection methods used in the project involve private and long-lasting elements.
