Oklahoma Proposes a Bill to Allow Bitcoin Payments

Dusty Deevers, a senator from Oklahoma, has proposed the Bitcoin Freedom Act, a bill that would grant employees and businesses in the state the option to receive Bitcoin for their payments and salaries.

Deevers officially submitted the bill, designated as SB325, on January 8, stressing that Bitcoin can provide protection for Oklahomans’ earnings as inflation continues to rise. According to Deevers, “Bitcoin offers a unique opportunity to safeguard investments when the value of the dollar is decreasing.”

The legislation is based on free-market principles and allows individuals, businesses, and employers to voluntarily choose BTC as a form of exchange. In addition to this, the act aims to establish a secure framework for Bitcoin transactions in Oklahoma, promoting its use for salaries, investments, and everyday transactions.

Deevers has long been critical of inflation and blames Washington’s policies for the declining value of the US Dollar. Deevers has also expressed his opposition to Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs), arguing that they could lead to excessive government surveillance. He believes that Bitcoin offers financial sovereignty to individuals.

This move comes as Oklahoma continues to make progress in the field of cryptocurrency. In May 2024, Governor Kevin Stitt signed a law to support blockchain and Bitcoin mining businesses in the state.
