Bitstamp has successfully obtained a MiFID Multilateral Trading Facility (MTF) license from the Slovenian Securities Market Agency.
This license, issued by the European Union, allows Bitstamp to operate a cryptocurrency exchange trading platform that is compliant with the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID).
This directive primarily applies to traditional financial markets and covers a wide range of financial products, including stocks, securities, and derivatives.
Now, with this new license, Bitstamp can offer crypto derivatives products, such as perpetual swaps, to customers within the EU.
In the past, Bitstamp had faced criticism for not possessing the MiFID license despite having around 50 other authorizations, mostly in the United States. However, with the MTF license, Bitstamp has met the strict capital requirements of the EU and has become one of the first cryptocurrency exchanges to receive this license.
