Former Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao received a four-month prison sentence in Seattle on Tuesday after pleading guilty to breaking anti-money laundering laws.

During the hearing, Zhao expressed remorse and took responsibility for his actions, stating that Binance now has measures in place to prevent money laundering and is cooperating with authorities.

The prosecution had requested a sentence of 36 months, accusing Zhao of purposely targeting US users and violating US laws for his own gain.

However, Judge Richard Jones disagreed and stated that Zhao was never informed of any illegal activity. Zhao’s lawyers asked for probation, highlighting his family, dedication to technology and desire to serve the greater good.

They also noted that his celebrity status and wealth could make prison dangerous, considering his cooperation with the government.
